چکیده

In this paper the effect of age, educational level, occupational group and regional labour market conditions on the probability of leaving the state of unemployment is estimated. We use a proportional hazard model based on aggregate data on incomplete spells of unemployment for males in the Netherlands. Effects of omitted variables and time dependence are studied in combination with a non-constant probability of becoming unemployed. The conclusion is that the subgroups identified with respect to age, education, occupation and region show very different patterns of the duration of unemployment. Especially age and education have a large effect on unemployment duration, but occupational group and regional labour market conditions do also play a significant role. Model specification tests lead to the conclusion that there is unobserved heterogeneity but no time dependence in our data set. The estimation results do not change if we incorporate the effect of a non-constant probability of becoming unemployed.

Modeling Factors Affecting Unemployment Duration Using Survival Analysis

Abstract. In many statistical studies‎, ‎we are faced with variables such as duration of unemployment‎, ‎duration of illness to death‎, ‎the lifespan of a piece‎, ‎duration of approval of a bill in the parliament‎, ‎and other similar cases‎. ‎In such studies‎, ‎the aim is to find and model the sources that affect the duration of the study period to control the mentioned period by identifying an...

Examining Effective Factors on Duration Time of Recommitment Using Cox's Proportional Hazard Model

Abstract. Recently, in most of scientific studies, the use of survival analysis is performed for examining duration time models.  One of the important applications of survival analysis is the study of recommitment crime in criminology which has not yet been considered in Iran.  So, with attention to the necessity and importance of predicting recommitment time and the analysis of duration model...

Job Finding and Inflow to Unemployment : The Case of Iran

In order to analyze the labor market through search and matching theory, we need deep parameters namely, rate of inflow to the unemployment pool and job-finding rate. In other words, these rates are primary parameters of matching function; hence, estimating these parameters is an essential step for the use of search and matching theory in every economy. In this paper, we estimate these rates of...

Life Duration of New Firms in Iranian Manufacturing Industries Using Cox Proportional Hazard Model

In this paper, the Cox proportional hazard model is used to answer several questions. In general, fourteen variables are applied in four groups: firm, industry, expenditure human resources specific characteristics as well. According to the previous literature in this field, the findings of this paper also show that the factors which affect life duration of firms are different between industries...

A Search Model of Discouragement

A Search Model of Discouragement Discouragement is a process occurring during an unemployment spell. As the spell prolongs, an individual gradually realises that the returns to search can no longer outweigh search costs, and hence she may eventually leave the labour force. This is analysed theoretically in a framework of unemployed search. We construct a search model, which is stationary from t...
